We are getting ready to examine how gender and stereotypical roles impact our elementary students. For this session, we will break into stations where we can analyze the information in small groups.
Station 1 - Indykids Article
Read the IndyKids article, Are Gendered Toys Affecting How Kids Grow Up? After summarizing your article, share your thoughts with a peer. In addition, think about if you would teach this article in an elementary classroom. On paper, please answer the following questions: What stood out to you from this article? Did the article connect to articles we read for class or any other event (what you saw in your placement, articles from TV, etc.)? Would you use this article in an elementary classroom? If so, what grade? * Click on the image to go to the article. |
Station 2 - Stop-Motion Animation Video |
Watch the stop-motion animation video on gender stereotyping by Austin's very own Hive Society scholars! Please answer the following questions:
What stood out to you in the video?
Did it align with one of our articles? If so, how?
*Click on the image to view the video. As you watch, think about how the video aligns with the article from Station 1.

Station 3 - Analyzing Children's Literature
Select one of the following books and read it with a partner. Then, create a basic lesson plan addressing gender. Your lesson plan must contain the following sections:
* Click on the content area in order to access the state standards.
- TEKS (Social Studies & English Language Arts Standards*)
- Objective (What will the students do during the lesson? - Be specific)
- Procedures (opening, guided, and independent practice)
- Assessment (How will you measure the objective?)
* Click on the content area in order to access the state standards.

Station 4 - Intersection of Race and Gender
As we continue to explore how gender roles and stereotypes impact our society, we need to also explore the impact of race AND gender on different individuals. Watch the commercial without sound first and pay attention to what you see in all of the images. Then, watch the video again with sound. What subtle message(s) did you notice in the commercial? What could you do as a teacher to help combat these stereotypes? | |
